Chalk cliffs, a tee on an island and a coastline few golfers have seen

Golf hole at Thracian Cliffs in Bulgaria with white chalk cliffs and the Black Sea stretching beyond the fairway

The 8th tee at Thracian Cliffs sits on a small island in the sea. You walk out to it, set your ball down with the Black Sea moving beneath you, and look back toward a coastline of white chalk cliffs that most golfers have never heard of. It is the kind of moment that makes you take out your phone, and then put it away again because you would rather watch.

Bulgaria is not the first country that comes to mind when you plan a serious golf trip. That is changing, and the reason is a short stretch of the northern Black Sea coast where some of the most dramatic golf in Europe has been laid out on cliffs above the water.

Where the cliffs meet the golf

The golf is concentrated around Cape Kaliakra, near Balchik and Kavarna, roughly thirty minutes to an hour from Varna. Three courses sit close together on the coast, each different in character, and together they make a case for Bulgaria as a destination in its own right.

The climate helps. The season is long and mild, which makes Bulgaria a good place to play golf when much of Europe is cold and grey.

Thracian Cliffs: the one you will talk about

Thracian Cliffs is the headline. It is an 18-hole Gary Player Signature course covering about 85 hectares on white chalk cliffs above the Black Sea. One reviewer described it as Pebble Beach on steroids, which is a big claim, but nearly every hole has sea views, the exception being the par-3 18th. The course hosted the 2013 Volvo Match Play, which gives you a sense of the standard.

The 6th is a par 3 of about 174 metres from the medal tee, played down to a green roughly 50 metres below you. The 7th is a par 4 that demands a carry of around 185 metres from the silver tee. And the 8th, with its tee on an island in the sea, is the hole that people photograph before they hit a shot. There are five sets of tees, and choosing the right one matters. A good round here is often ten shots over your handicap, so play the tees that suit you and enjoy the view.

BlackSeaRama: Gary Player's first in Eastern Europe

BlackSeaRama, a few kilometres south of Thracian Cliffs near Kavarna, is another Gary Player design. It was his first completed project in Eastern Europe and is considered the first championship signature course in Bulgaria. It is a par 72 with Black Sea views, well-kept fairways and fast, undulating greens, and it won an international award for best new golf course in the world from Golf Inc. magazine in 2009.

Where Thracian Cliffs is theatrical, BlackSeaRama is polished. It rewards control, and greens that look simple can turn quickly.

Lighthouse: a champion's design on the plateau

Lighthouse Golf sits on the white, rocky plateau of Cape Kaliakra and was designed by Ian Woosnam, the Masters champion. It is an 18-hole championship course on the coast with dramatic water hazards. Together with Thracian Cliffs and BlackSeaRama, it completes a trio that is hard to match anywhere in this part of Europe.

Why Bulgaria deserves your attention

There is a particular pleasure in playing somewhere before everyone else has caught on. The golf here is serious and the scenery is remarkable, and you can play three very different courses within a short distance of each other. The coast is quiet, and the sense of discovery is part of the appeal.

Bulgarian golf is still being discovered, which means the people who go now get to say they were early.
